  • Ambiance

UMU has a unique and topnotch Japanese restaurant setting located on the hotel ground floor. It has a live cooking station in which the chefs prepare sushi, maki, tempura and other recipes. It also has private dining rooms for different groups or number of guests accentuated with Japanese finish. Another attractive spot of the restaurant is their al fresco that has a koi pond with scenic Japanese patio. All areas and the ambiance generally is very relaxing and intimate.

  • Food

The restaurant offers an ample selection of Japanese recipes. We opted to create our own four-course meal.

As for the starter, we chose kani sarada salad to ease digestion. It is a fusion of crabsticks and mixed vegetables. It was served in an uncommon form of salad that is rolled like Maki. It is practically easy to chow down using chopsticks as it is picked per roll.

Of course, we would not skip their sushi. For okonomi-sushi vinigared rice, I got tamago that is simply the Japanese egg omelet. It has two-piece sushi per serving. There is nothing special about the taste of this sushi.

In Makimono Rolled Sushi section, we ordered gyuniku cream cheese maki.  It has a great value for money since it is served in a whole roll that can satiate the hunger. Cream cheese lovers will be totally satisfied with this Maki.

The set menu steak gozen is our main course. It seems a bit off that we ordered steak in a Japanese resto but surprisingly it is the best recipe that we had for the entire course. It includes an appetizer, 2 kinds of sashimi, salad pan-grilled U.S. rib eye in wafu steak sauce, rice, miso soup, and dessert. The meat is tender and perfectly complemented with the tasteful steak sauce. It is indeed affordable for a steak and sides.

Our lunch date was capped off with soft serve chocolate ice cream which is included in their set menu.

  • Service

Staffs are impressively dressed up in kimonos that complete a real Japanese dining experience. They bid a warm welcome and courteously ushered guests to the designated or requested seats. Service is a little slow but somehow efficient. They seem to be understaffed during that time for the huge area with several guests. The staff who took our orders missed one recipe nonetheless, it turned out good since their servings are hefty and enough for two people.

  • Something special

Surprisingly, when we are about to pay our bill in cash, the generous staff offered a 30% discount for a BDO credit card holder which is an amazing deal. The discount was applied to the total food bill. Certainly, we would not miss such promo. Domo Arigato!
